Each Spring the Galesburg High School National Honor Society (NHS) inducts new members. Membership selection is an in-depth process. During the third term of each year, all tenth (juniors) and fourteenth (seniors) term students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher qualify scholastically for candidacy. Once a student has qualified scholastically, he/she will be required to complete an information form and a five paragraph essay. GHS faculty then rank each student in three categories: leadership, character, and service. Typically the faculty ranking information and the essay are then give to the National Honor Society Faculty Advisory Committee who, upon evaluation, selects students for membership. Upon induction into the National Honor Society, members must fulfill the obligations of membership. Due to the current circumstances we are in, any student that completed the requirements to be considered for induction were formally invited to join the National Honor Society.
Under normal circumstances, students that are going to be inducted into NHS are "tapped" by current NHS members. The tapping typically occurs each year when current NHS members surprise new inductees by inviting them out of their first block class to enjoy donuts and milk in the cafeteria. There inductees are celebrated by their peers, the advisors, and GHS administration. It is truly an honor to be inducted into the National Honor Society!
Due to social distancing guidelines, our tapping could not happen as it has every other year. Nonetheless, our NHS faculty advisors still wanted to celebrate the inductees and provide them with a surprise and the recognition they deserve! This was accomplished this year through a no contact "ring and run" style tapping. Current NHS members rang the doorbell or knocked on the doors of inductees and left a decorated cookie from the Carriage House Bakery along with the official invitation to join NHS. Proper distancing was maintained from start to finish as the current members ran back to their car to honk and cheer when the inductee found the surprise waiting outside.
This was truly a special moment for many of our students today. Students will be formally inducted with a ceremony at a later date. While this may need to happen virtually, the following 55 junior and senior students are to be commended for their hard work in and outside of the classroom which resulted in this honor:
